Meeting with Ali Jackson

Meeting with Ail Jackson

What is the history of A&B?
A&B was launched in 1998, however, it wasn’t until 2000 when it began to gain momentum as it kicked off 2000 with an All-Star weekend.

What is the purpose of A&B?
A&B’s main focus is to train young athletes between the ages of 7 -14 to excel in their education and sports such as basketball, football, soccer and boxing. Also, students must demonstrate good grades in order to continue to participate in sports. Other than sports, students may also venture into artistic activities such as drawing and music.

What is the goal of A&B/core values?
A&B’s main goal is to help their students build an educational foundation for them to prepare themselves towards a higher education. Sports also play a key factor, as students will develop proper techniques so that they can implement those skills towards high school sports.

Why is A&B different from other NOP’s?
Other NOP’s been attempting to compete with some of the sports clinics that A&B offers, however, they are not trying to reach kids by helping them with their education. A&B offers the beyond part which consists of the educational side of A&B.

What does ‘BEYOND’ stand for?
The education side of the organization helps students to excel in school with better math and writing skills. Once students prove that they are improving their grades, they will be allowed to participate in sports.

What is the background of A&B’s YOUTH and age range?
When A&B first launched back in 1998, it wasn’t functioning very well, it took 2 years in order for it fully develop as several sport clinics were being brought into the program. Currently, young females athletes seem to want to participate a lot more than young males. A&B’s targeted age range is 7-14.

How does A&B want the public to feel about them?
A&B makes it clear that it would like to be known as an organization that provides educational values to its students. A&B wants to work harder to obtain more young male athletes.

Where/How do people learn about A&B?
Bulk emails seem to be a lot more successful as opposed to using posters and flyers. Also, word of mouth works as a major source of advertisement. A low budget prevents A&B from printing out posters and flyers.

Is there a cost for young men and women to join the program?
Attending sports clinics do require certain costs, however, certain students are awarded with certain scholarships and transportation. Also, a group of student may also receive assistance with sports equipment. PAL, several sponsors and other organizations tend to get involved with A&B in order to help out with costs as well.
A&B also offers several individual outstanding artist awards for students who demonstrate a good painting and singing skills.

Who will maintain the new website?
A&B has a specialized person who will maintain the site. Digital Design students will provide basic training to A&B in order for them to be able to provide maintenance.

How much of a budget do we have, if any?
Currently, we don’t really have a budge to work off of. For now, Ali did agree that he would like for us to design business cards for A&B.

A Little R & D

Without any real basis on which to begin putting together a real and tangible web interface, my brainstorming session went as follows:

I started by going over my notes from our meeting with Ali. Things that stuck out in my mind were

1) "the website is for the parents"
2) women are the most responsive
3) he loves the color indigo
4) he wants an "edgy" feel

From there, I wanted to see similar organizations' websites. The vast majority are mediocre aesthetically, however, I was able to locate three pretty good-looking examples of kid-focused, community athletics programs websites:

Skyhawks.com
i9 Sports
KidsSportsAndFitness.com

I wouldn't call any of those websites "edgy", but they look better than most that I came across. Next, I wanted to check out some logo and type ideas for what the new Athletics & Beyond might look like. I took a look at some logos and found three that seemed to relate in different ways to what we may be going for.

Still though, no edge...I do find it interesting how the NBA logo is just naturally split into 2 main colors...Ali loves the idea of a landing page split into 2 sides (Athletics/Beyond). Of course i'm not talking about mimicking any of these logos...just brainstorming ideas.

Next I checked out some graffiti-like fonts and played around with the typography. I also decided to extrapolate colors based on a couple of different shades of indigo.

And lastly, I checked out some different WordPress themes, since we're using a WordPress site. Obviously, we would change some of the layout and colors.

I found one that uses red (Ali likes red).

Another good one uses an image gallery prominently placed that we could use as navigation.

And finally, this one uses another image gallery but adds an embedded video onto the home page.

Photo/Video Shoot...

Hey you all,

I was talking to Michelle earlier, after our class, and she advised us form the green screen shoot.
It would be to much of a hassle and to complicated for time being. Michelle advised us to pick nice locations instead to get some great pictures or videos.

If there should be keying involved in curtain aspects if necessary to do it the old fashion way in PS.

Maybe just take in all the info form todays meeting with Ali and think about it for a day or so and figure out the best solutions for him.

Keep Spooning!
